My husband snores and my dog is an active dreamer.
Sometimes, it’s too much for me and I tiptoe off to the calm, quiet guest room. Last night was one of those nights. I had weird, unsettling dreams, the kind that happen when you’re not in your own bed. Or maybe it was the spicy food we had for dinner!
Yesterday, I spent a lot of time in the kitchen. So John stepped in, gentleman that he is, and made us dinner. Truthfully, he couldn’t wait to get his hands on the wok! No, not THIS wok:
THAT wok is sort of MY domain. I’m talking about one of our fabulous wedding gifts, a 13″ wok- the kind you stir-fry dinner in! John has been itching to whip up one of his specialties with it ever since we opened the box it came in. I sat back with one of my cranberry rosemary spritzers and watched him do his thing.
On the menu: Spicy Tofu and Veggies with Soba Noodles. John used to be a cook, and he’s far more skilled than I am in the kitchen. He fried up some tofu. He expertly chopped up a rainbow of veggies. He used every Asian condiment in the fridge. He measured nothing.
He explained his technique of creating a “flavor pocket” in the center of the veggies, where the chunks of garlic, slices of ginger, sauces, and herbs and spices marinate in the oils. Once the garlic is browning, he does his chef trick of flipping the veggies over and over until everything is coated in the deliciousness.
I’m sure we can all imagine what would happen if I attempted this.
Into the wok go the soba noodles, and the countdown is ON to chow time.
My bowl of tofu, veggies, and noodles was a bit on the spicy side- but as John proudly stated, “I can take it.” The wok let the veggies stay crisp, and he got the texture of the tofu just the way I like it. John’s dinner was served in a festive bowl and mine was gone within minutes. So delish!
Whether or not the spicy meal contributed to my crazy dreams or not, it was a great dinner- wok success! Plus, my chef did the dishes! BONUS.
